Let us share in a part of you
Christmas from the past-
so sat friends, close and distant
settled in for the night.

Two hours at a table
sat nine friends
ate hors d’oeuvres, drank wine
and shared their past.

Gifts of large families
memory of the poor,
only children or number eight
took a turn.

Then the quiet women spoke
of no Christmas, no bells that night-
but in the morning of that day
old, rusted sleds and paint for four.

In cheerful voices, when they finished,
they raised their cups to Christmas.
